My name is Karen Smith, and I am the owner and cake designer at The Cake Lady & Petite Pastries. I began my career in Burlington, Vt., where I received my AOS degree in the Culinary Arts. I then interned at Sunriver Resort, the famous AAA Four-Diamond award winning property in Oregon. My final externship was at Coquette Café in the historic Third Ward of Milwaukee. As pátissier for Sanford D’Amato, the James Beard award-winning chef, I was able to truly hone my skills. After helping to open Harlequin Bakery, I was ready for a new challenge. I took an assistant position at The Cake Lady with its founder, Sara Unkefer. I have since studied with Colette Peters of Colette’s Cakes in New York City at the International Wilton School of Cake Design in Chicago. From baking to decorating, I am hands-on, ensuring that the utmost care and professionalism goes into each product.
